- Scope and ContentFeelings at their parting. Front [of building] resembling that of Newby seen about four miles from Bath. Met Hatsell on road, overtook the Grenvilles. Arrival in Town at two. Marble tables coming tomorrow. Black box safe. Invitations from Lords Hertford and Hillsborough to Grantham and Fritz. Sent proper excuses. Dined with Pelhams. Stanley's death; cut his throat in a grove, his father cut his in his bed. The papers cite Grantham as his successor. Sloane will greatly benefit by the unfortunate event. The Pelhams think Grantham should apply if the Principal place is good enough. Strongest inducement the opportunity to provide for Fritz. Late Duke of Newcastle was Cofferer, Coll. Pelham his Deputy, succeeded by Duke of Leek and James Bradwell/Brudenell?. Therefore no difficulty in point of rank. Will take no further step until he's heard from Frederick except accepting if properly offered. Much talk about Sir J. Shaw. Attended Opera. Lord Chatham goes tomorrow. Hasn't repaid £150. Lord Pelham longs to see Tom. Grantham hoping to "make something" of him when he comes and that he will get out of the confined sphere of the Regiment. Glad to hear Draper and Genn. Agreed well. Party of Lady Pelham's tonight, Middleton's etc... Writing from Brookes', John St. John just come in.
