Grantham's 40th birthday "Indeed it is a very serious thing to be forty years old, far from home, single and unsettled". Quietly celebrated with Kaunitz, Salazar, Munro, the Officers, Marchetti, Fabré, Giusti to dinner. Fairer to take a letter Wednesday or Thursday to go via Lisbon. General daily routine outlined. No great dinners planned although the French Embassador must give one. Little Prelates with Caps, one for the Patriarch and one for the Nuncio in Portugal. The Gibralter Officers go in a day or two. Projet d'omeublement [plans for furniture] sent [above]. Sorry that Pohl is gone, should have made him work on. Seve figures in his Room mix extremely well with the Marbles on the Desert etc.. Lazaro recovers. Poor Roxas is dead and his widow in bad circumstances. Princess' lying in may be at Madrid, highly acceptable to the Hijos de la Balena and more convenient to Grantham et al than at the Pardo. Drawing £400 only this month, reimbursed above £100 by C.
