  • Scope and Content
Thinking of leaving off daily writing, mundane life and repetition will make him susceptible to Ennui, hasn't opportunity enough to dissuade him of this. Describes daily routine. Pedro Sylva has obtained Leave to go out of the Army and take Orders. "Must be for the sake of a Cardinal's cap...". He will lost his Grandeeship as well as his Wife's Estate. Courtesy will continue the title. Masin will probably have a house at Aranjuez. Caylus has been ill, but now recovered. Hasn't seen much of Masin recently. Grantham confined by his pumping. Munro is as unsuspicious as ever, daily thinks he brings news, goes regularly to Granda's, a very French house. Spoke sentimentally of the attentive behaviour of the Intendant's son saying that "natural Affection was inherent to all Animals". The Silversmith showed him Zenowieff's Masserines, made after Frederick's. Grantham has thoughts of a Ewer. Portugal's Plate is dear. Portugal burdened with a Gala Fool allowed to come from Portugal to compliment the Queen [Dowager] on her birthday, with bad verses. He is a Doctor, a Lawyer, a Poet and a Bullfighter, very fine and wore his hair in a Adonis. Expresses his affection for Frederick. 8 April [1778] Short journal today. Writing under cover of Sir J.L.[Lambert?]. Attended the Pardo. Dined with Waddilove, called on Masin and Portugal, walked round to the Prado. Writing to Saubaigné to thank him. 9 [April 1778] Attended the Pardo, went with Kaunitz, dined at Losada's. Cyphered and copied until 9 pm. Queen of Portugal seized with rheumatism, Court not coming tomorrow. Uncertainty about Aranjuez. No time to write to Draper, make excuses to him. Still anxious for letter from Frederick in England. 10 April 1778.
