  • Scope and Content
Daily routine. Attended Pardo, dined at Morino's. Torrejon's sale, found Waddilove, made him buy a pretty cup and cover with saucer for a peso duro. Dresden China. Spinelli's sale, also looked in on. El Gobierno have prohibited the exhibition of Voltaire and Rousseau's figures at the wax work. 4 April 1778. Gazola's last night, happy to have an occasion to talk as much as he pleased about Frederick. Saw a beautiful Papier Maché Carving on a Pannell which Masin is wild after. Will probably send for some. Kauntiz/Kaunitz very pleased at Grantham giving him the green poplin. Zenowieff has received orders to give a fete, has been allowed 40,000 Reals, he will add 20,00. Thinks of a Masquerade at the Sall where they used to be but is advised to give something at Aranjuez, doesn't like idea so much as it would probably exclude his acquaintances. Another neighbour has died, the poor Tendilla. Much regretted in the Family, she was god and charitable. Pozzi just called, sends his compliments. Fernanunez has sent word he will take Grantham to some music. The Masserano's, Fabre and Munro all dined. Madame Albequerque has miscarried. New road between Casa del Campo and the River is a great work. Don Daniel talks of going to England with Almodovar and returning with the new Swede. Asked Wools to come and look at his Clock which started working fine again as soon as he viewed it. Has a new fashioned Oval Watch. 5 April 1889. Good Concert with Fernañunz [sic] last night. Daily routine details etc... Portugal had carried his Oil Cruets to the Pardo. Saw a Monkey sold for 120 Reals. Dined Tete a tete with Waddilove who has now gone. Misses Frederick particularly at this time of day. Will feel easier once he has heard from him in England. Walked along Aguirres Roads. Has written a short letter to Frederick to try it's fate through France [L 30/15/54/21a]. Enquired at Byers after his Plateau. Returned from playing some music. These few lines for Frederick as he's not there. 6 April 1778 Received his Bayone letters this morning, 8 and 9 under M. Saubaigne's Cover, one under Joyes. Feelings at receiving them. M. D'Arnou's civilities mentioned. Discussion about whether Frederick's descriptions of his journey make Grantham wish to take the same route, whether what one sees becomes an object of immediate interest to the other. We "are really part of each other, this may be called Childish, or Romantic, but cannot be conceived by anybody, who has not as you and I have, cemented the most tender Affection....". Enjoys his letters including his "Nonsense". Only jokes he hears now are the "coarse raillery" against Portugal and the "pantomime Controversies" between the K. and the N. [King and Nuncio?]. Cold quite well this morning. Went to the Pardo. Dined with Galvez. Nanny longs to see Frederick, she and Draper were both persuaded that he and Grantham travelled together.
