    Happy he is recovering even though left hand still swollen etc.. Jack will be with them a day sooner than expected. Unable to feed goldfish after breakfast as usual due to bad weather. Play Billiards in the afternoon when weather bad. Mr. Edgcumbe a little out of sorts having been refused by one of Lady Spencer's [daughters?]. Mrs. Stainforth wrote a civil letter. Said Lady Grantham and children go to Wrest this week. Mr. Radcliffe going to Exeter Assizes next week. Agrees with Mr. Batt in thinking there are sufficient grounds for committing Davis, but not enough to convict him without a confession. Thinks he would have confessed if he'd gone with Mr. Sarel, the jail keeper to Exeter. Davis still at Dock, setting up a Barber's shop. Supposes Mr. Harrry Ley down next week. Colonel Barré thought very ill, reports in newspapers. Nothing known of it at Bowood so hopes it isn't true. Conflicting reports of Harry Pelham from Jack. Glad they may see Miss Harris this year, hope she will make it to Devonshire. Has Alfred recovered his surprize? Captain Pole's bad account of Richard's health [nothing more specific].
