  • Scope and Content
Obliged for their constant correspondence and forwarding letters from home. Will execute commission for silks. Will be at Valencia on Sunday (currently on the Road) thence to Barcelona. Detour intended, to Martosel near Monserrat to see Convent. Please forward his letter after this one to Lyons, Messrs. Bouquet and Co.. May go to Montpellier and Nismes on way there. Ask Comte Massin where he should turn out of the road to see a Roman bridge he mentioned in France. Mr. Wilkie was very civil, gave him a good bed. Delivered him letter to Mrs. Comyn[?], did not stay long enough to profit by it. Mr. Wilkie's disputes are the same as Sherrat's, there is no factory and the people they are at variance with are Irish Roman Catholics under Spanish protection; rivals and enemies to everything English in every Port. Port Sherrat said he received his dismission without entering into the Subject: Dr. [?] Burrows escaped Pelham to latter’s great joy. [Full story of Wilkie's situation; L 30/14/421]. Supposes Pezarro tired of Madrid now his Ball is over and forgotten. The young Massins will be an addition to the Trente un Party. Mentions Gazola. Appointment of the Queen of Portugal Regent during the King's illness; is it entirely with consent of Pombal? They were never good friends. "Mon chere Ami passe port mal and has more embroidery en Tabac than ever". Their success in America must astonish everybody. No active preparations at Cartogena, seven ships in the Port all commissioned but not ready. Two Frigates on the Stocks are to be launched this month. Regiments at Cadis in great want of recruits From Valencia; seen many things not mentioned by Swinburne, the Cathedral and the Church of the Order of Montesa. Robinson should leave Spain this way if way through Catalonis not very bad. Mr. Boswell attentive. Thanks to Grantham for letter. Compliments to Waddilove and Shadwell. Glad former arrived safely.
