  • Scope and Content
Detained by heavy rain. Concerned to have disappointed Corregidor of Chichlana so often. Expects Chaise to arrive at Granada in a few days. Waddilove has written to Mr. Marsh at Malaga asking him to send the Chaise and any letters from Madrid. Governor of Cadiz remarkably Civil, invited him to dine yesterday it being St. Carlos [day?]. Mentions his politeness in view of Sir Thomas Gascoyne's having abused him. Suspect judgement of him, Mr. Hardy has always experienced civility from him also. His conduct in the Police of the town is of no importance. Waddilove not invited, didn't expect it, always asks for excuses to be made for him, "great people, you know are not the company he likes". Troops all embarked, not likely to go to sea yet. Thought that the Admiral tried to dissuade Cevallos from embarking before weather settled, latter determined to show the Court his readiness to go and rejected advice. O'Reilly took advantage of sudden embarkation by sending Regiments at the Port into Cadis[sic] which will prevent disembarkation. Detention by contrary winds will make Gervallous very unpopular in this as in most public affairs. Happy to hear of the Blow upon the Americans, the Howes' seem to have shown great abilities etc.. Mr. Hardy does not intend waiting today. Regards to Grantham
