  • Scope and Content
Letter of 5 November detained by Margate mails. Gratitude for Robinson's relieving his mind from a pressing burden. Professions of friendship to a man whose brother is in office of power are often viewed suspiciously however his sentiments were none long before. Grantham's elevation. Many private letters to Grantham during first stages of his indisposition, sorry to distress Government and him by soliciting an abrupt recall. Ready to stay until July or August giving time for a successor to be found. His illness has ended with a rough, hard cough. If no better soon will request leave to pass winter of 1782 in Pisa or Naples unless return to England deemed useful. Leaves situation in hands of Grantham. Discusses his spirits. Reasons to stay, important business, respect for the Empress, connection between England and Russia, attachment and affection for Empress. Anxiety for Sir G. Elliot, future prospects of domestic society would be dashed by his death. His case is hereditary, little hope. Trusts justice will be done by Parliament to the uprightness and ability's of the present rulers. The only man in Opposition for whom he felt a leaning seems inclined to such ardent and factious measures as are totally inconsistent with his [Harris's] ideas and principles etc. Grantham was not in post when Harris expressed his inclinations to follow this extraordinary man in his political career, Grantham's moderation and wisdom much more suitable guides for his sentiments etc. Congratulations on birth of second nephew, also on Lord [Lady/} Howe's[?] admirable condition?
