Bad state of American Army as described in a letter from Strachy, General Howe's secretary. Washington has only 7000 men "so ill attached to him that one half obliged to guard the other half" etc... Speedy submission expected. Extremely cold and wet summer. Lionel Damer and Miss Toasen's engagement off. Latter a relative of Lady Essex. George Damar at Spa. His father will not pay his debts. Sir Alex Gilmour is off, due to debt. Lord Seaforth is at St. Omers, under name of Wilson. Drinking heavily. Dalrymple, Wilbraham's friend, has book out, not as good as expected. Robertson's first two volumes [History of America] worthy of every merit. Saw Monro's carriage at Coachmaker's in St. Martin's Lane. Costing near £400. Intending to go to Germany in two or three weeks time. Staying some time at Dresden with Stepney. Will be back in England before Christmas. Any commissions for Germany? Remembrances to Mr. [Frederick] Robinson, Masin, Zinovieff. Will write to Waddilove soon.
