Letter to Thomas Wing from Thomas Bennett at Woburn: “I went to Ampthill today prepared to pay Mrs Evans the amount agreed upon, but Messrs Eagles refused to allow her to sign the Release, consequently I did not pay the £200 until I hear again from you”. “Their Argument was to this effect, viz. that as the Arbitrators (if they had gone forward) were only to adjudicate the Sum due to Evans on the Bill [unreadable word] we ought not to expect a Release for more than their Award of the Bill; & this decision was not to determine any thing else that might arise out of Evans’ Matters – although they profess to say & believe there is nothing more against the Duke”. “I am quite as satisfied as they can be, but this objection to sign the General Release makes one think they have something still to bring forward. Messrs eagles do not object to give a Receipt in full for this particular Bill & express great anxiety to have the business concluded, but for my part know the people in law to deal with I see no Reason why the Duke should forego the Release & strongly suspect something else will come to light”. “When you see Mr Adam on this Matter let me know & I will proceed as you direct”.
