- Scope and ContentDescribes Spring at Newby. Visited Grantham's cousins, they were enquiring after him. The Dean not in town but called upon Mr. Mason. The Chapter are again "shewing their teeth without being able to hurt me". Mr. Ayre, the Deans son-in-Law, wants Topcliffe for himself or a friend. They are trying to prove it is not within distance of C.B. [Cherry Burton]. Waddilove not worried, opportunity lost for their entering a Caveat against the dispensation with the Archbishop of Cantry [Canterbury] or the Lord Chancellor. The Archbishop will be at Doncaster next week at Mrs. Wrightson's. Waddilove will call on his return. Discussion of distance mentioned above. Certificate from Parish made by three of the most substantial farmers; Walker, Rockliffe & Coopland. Waddilove in no doubt about distance. C.B. [Cherry Burton] will produce about £300 a year, gross rents now about £370 and £400 whenever he pleases. Has let each man his Tythe for a year with an advance of about £10 among the whole. Supposes he's lost about this in his Composition with them for small Tythes. Ordered some porter for Captain Butler of 'the Lark', has heard nothing since. Expecting to find Mr. Sparre's Chaise nearly finished. Lady Ligonier has been at York, "in a low style" with a Cheshire farmer of abilities. Sir Js. Gn. at Beverley to write soon.
