Douglas Hazard was moved to Bedford early in the Second World War from the London factory of his employer, Bovril Ltd. His office was housed in a vacant cycle shop at 121 Midland Road and he lived at 132 Foster Hill Road in a house owned by Mr and Mrs Sykes who ran a small sweet shop in the High Street. After a spell in Chelmsford Hospital he returned to Bedford, firstly to The Crescent then to 173 Hurst Grove, where another resident was the retiring County Librarian, Mr. Glayter. He was declared medically unfit for aircrew in teh RAF so rejoined the ARP at the post opposite 132 Foster Hill Road. Shortly after the war ended he returned with all the Bovril staff to Old Street from where he retired in 1987 to Ilford (Essex), later moving to Suffolk.
