  • Scope and Content
Would have liked party at Lord Clarendon's very well. Obliged to Grantham for speaking so fully to Pepper, who will be glad of opportunity to serve him [Fritz]. Received letter from Pitt pressing him to go to Cambridge, impossible to comply. Jack [Parker] will be almost as disappointed at not going into Devonshire as pleased with cause that prevents it [not given]. Lord Galway's request that Grantham & Lady Robinson's tenants be prevented, via Mr. Ellis, from voting against him & Milner [?]. Fritz replied that Ellis should receive direction directly from Grantham & Mrs. Robinson. Newby Park; details of progress of work in garden and house. Thomas Harrison making roof for New Lodge and high fir paling around kitchen garden etc... East Wing finished etc. Redgrave's work finished by June. Update on livestock. Betty Smith pleased to see him. Visit from Mr. Ramshaw, warm advocate of Mr. Pitt's & afraid of Waddilove's working his vote for Weddell, but the Curate depends on the Vicar & the old clerk, who is a freeholder & cannot go against the Curate. Mr. Belwood hasn't been there for some time, expected at Sir Bellingham's and Sir John Ingoldsby's this week. Proposes being in London very soon. Mr. Mickle expected home next Saturday, to see Fritz there on Monday or Tuesday. 1 April 1784 Executed all Grantham's commissions with Tom Smith, Betty, Blanchard & Redgrave. Dining with Mrs. Blackett. Meeting Belwood Monday. Elections; Laurence arrives tomorrow, his conduct disagreeable to his constituents, no connection with Lord Grantly, Mrs. Allanson has declared for Weddel & Foljambe distressing her friends. Pitt's popularity very great there. Influence of property and great connections forces many votes against the wills of the Freeholders. 2 April 1784
