  • Scope and Content
Saw Mr. Belwood, asked him to check on Masons & get on with Gallery [Newby Park]. Checked over house, no dust covers on Lady Grantham's chairs & sofa. Betty Smith intended making paper ones. Told her he'd mention it to Lord G[rantham]. Pulled down old Water House with Mickle on Friday, new wall will join old one at east end of semicircle, whole to the corner of the Saw Pit will be nearly finished. Mickle to carry on with gardens & foot path. Beginning Park fence after Xmas. Mrs. Margaret & Mrs. Hutchinson only ones there [Newby Hall]. Tempestuous wind all evening. Several trees blown down. Archbishop of Canterbury, Mrs. Moore & three children called to see Gallery [Newby Hall]. Mrs. Weddel invited them to dinner, but they were already engaged to go to Dr. Cooper at Kirkby Overblows. Breakfast at Tower end of Gallery, dine in Great Room, play Whist in Library. Will be leaving before Smyth returns from Westmorland. Hope Tom's rash gone. Thinks being at Pitt's Buildings as good for Grantham as for them, constant exercise. Hopes story of J. Townshend is untrue & without foundation. Mrs. J. Martin brought to bed of a girl, thinks it the fashion & that Lord Hardwicke right. Assumes Fitzherbert left England before Grantham reached London. Who succeeds Maddison; remember his bowel trouble, thinks over fatigued by work. Sorry no prospect of keeping off Plainer. Dining at Mrs. Hutchinson's Monday.
