  • Scope and Content
State of works at Newby [Park]; brick part of new building up to bottom of upper window of staircase. All stonework of garden fence as far as water engine finished, begun again at other end. River not risen above path. Harry's men filling up foundations of old wall & levelling around the knowl at end of garden. Mickle expected tomorrow. Stone masons have only cut stones; set none. Blanchard promises quick progress. Mr. Belwood coming tomorrow to meet with Cundall & Braithwait/e. House in the nicest order, fire in old library etc. Riding Grantham's horse. Dined on partridge. Walked to dam, many salmon. Weddel's tomorrow, directed Boroughbridge Postmaster to send his [Fritz's] letters there. From thence to Harry Thompson's, on to Ripon, Studley then Newby [Hall]. Box with Carp taken by last flood. Staffordshire ware arrived from London. Definitive Treaty, glad when signed, suppose Dutch accede immediately. Inevitable useless hot debate in Parliament as a consequence, regrets this as all the questions in which they were concerned last year were highly painful to him. Lady Pelham concerned at Tom's absence, will miss him if they come to Town. Thinks Lord Pelham satisfied at diminution of expense however. Love to Lady Grantham & children.
