Boys left today, using Carlisle coach, picking it up at Boroughbridge. Mr. Bell saw Dick's leg last night, healing, but must keep quiet. If they had stayed at Studley leg would have been well before Ralph's opus was begun, he says he'll do it at Firbeck. At Studley; the five ladys, the Laurences had gone, Lady Anne Cecil went this morning. Played Quadrille every evening. Waddilove dined Saturday & was invited today. Sir John Jervis to have command in Mediterranean; they take Richard on Grantham's or Mr. Parker's recommendation. Yesterday being Sunday, had full narrative of the Hurricane. York Races; too few Ladies for a Ball the first two nights. Miss Dalton mortified. Lord Fitzwilliam had a great Fren. Betty Smith [at Newby Park] wept when boys left. Sierre to visit her. Grantham's horse better. Just received Grantham's of 29th. Received one also from Harry Thompson, can't visit this week. Fritz to Weddel's. Still write to him at Newby [Hall] save losing letters. Feels sorry for Maddison, wishes Tom Pelham succeeded him at Paris.
