  • Scope and Content
Arrived safely, lay at Salisbury and Exeter on way. Travelled with boy [assume Jack Parker]. Mr. & Mrs. Montague there. Reconciliation doesn't seem very cordial. Mr. Fortescue away tomorrow. New Eating Room handsome etc... New Library comfortable. Round table in Bow window of Blue room with Madrid Inkstand on it. Hedge removal from Merry field Hill a great improvement but Plantation not thriving. Fine weather travelling, roads very stony & bad after Exeter, nothing like Yorkshire ones, "style and cultivation and civilization much inferior to ours, which I was not a judge of till this year". Duke and Duchess of Devonshire expected. Lord Charles Spencer's Regiment comes next week. Has taken little white house overlooking meadow.
