    Heard of safe progress to Devizes en route to London from Bath. Death of Hans Stanley; Grantham should apply for Coffership. Dined at the Bear with Storer, Tom and two of his Officers. Tom, Steele and Mr. Busby to Bristol to see Clifton & Holwells. Returning tomorrow after breakfast with Sir Casar Hawkins. Dined alone, too late to be invited to dinner at Jack Lee's with Storer. Dining with Bishop of Worcester (Brownlow North), tomorrow. Lady Frankland arrived yesterday, will visit on first opportunity. Mrs. Macaulay hopes Grantham may go Lord Lieutenant to Ireland giving her a pretext to pass another winter in Dublin. Peter, Grantham's friend, has left off all his fine Gala colours. No Ball in Bath tonight due to subscription tomorrow. Nothing but cards at New Rooms. If de la Pierre knows the man whom Sierre thinks of as John's successor, hire him for either Fritz or Grantham.
