  • Scope and Content
Glad of Grantham's safe arrival at Madrid. Shadwell; considerably mended but can't judge his present views. What news of Pohl. Has anything been done about the copies of Murillo's for Mr. Parker. Has put portrait of Mr. Thomas Morley in snuff box made at Paris for Grantham's portrait. Has ordered a frame for the latter, also a chagrin case (for portrait out of the frame) to travel in. Will bespeak Monmorin's watch on return to London. Dined at Serles with Batt, Burton, Pepper, Legge, Stenman[?] and Wodehouse. Latter to be married. Supped at Burton's chambers. Went to Court, thought it right to appear in mourning. Set out to Stanmer. Mr. & Mrs. Trevor and some Militia Officers at dinner on arrival. Hopes Tom will return from Brighthelmstone when Middleton's arrive. Much work done at Stanmer, paling, extended plantations, lodges finished. Hopes Grantham will remember content of letters lost when Lisbon Packet taken. Lady Carmarthen's elopement, Lord Carmarthen assumed to want a divorce. Experimental legislature should be tried to prevent scandalous ease of divorce. Mr. Franklin's death a great loss to Mr. Parker.
