  • Scope and Content
Unable to send news he would like to [assume reference to Grantham's possible return]. Will question Monsieur Almodobar when he sees him, does not anticipate much from him though. Not happy with Grantham's expression "tolerably easy" in his letter, however would rather not have his feelings concealed. Tom is grown very thin. Dined on turtle at Star & Garter. Bill; £35, over three guineas each. Mentions alterations to house at Star & Garter, Diletante room extended to Carlton House Gardens etc. Went to Vauxhall with Tom, may swim in Thames if weather continues good. At Court yesterday, Nanny took leave for season. Duchess of Bedford enquired after Grantham, Duchess of Argyle and Lady Gower lose their beauty. Lord Suffolk mangled by gout. Lady Charlotte Talbot, Lady Foley and Lady Sefton still handsome. Mr. Duncombe to be married for third time, to Miss Hales. Gave £1000 for Jennings dog. Lord Temple to be married to Miss Hamilton at Bath. Met Preston, sees Emily occasionally at Ranelagh. Tom has put on his uniform; scarlet with white waistcoat & breaches, silver buttons and epaulettes. Likely to be sent out of county as soon as Regiment raised. Mr. Porter lucky to have him camp so near Saltram. Describes little boy's relationship with Nanny etc.."too much dominion" upstairs. M Droz[?] wishes to be remembered. Hopes for fresh orders about Masin's coach. Cannot find who is to make Brancifortes Pianoforte. Pinafiels handkerchiefs ready for shipping next week but not bracelet or two bad crayon portraits he & Tom are almost ashamed to send. Assumes no picture necessary to recall them to Grantham, on this basis hasn't removed from their places Grantham's by Hamilton West or even the striking resemblance made by T….. Qua[?].
