  • Scope and Content
Update on letters which have arrived or not. Fritz feels Grantham not adapting to solitude very easily. Reiterates offer to return to Spain if necessary although Dr Warren has advised against another long stay. Discussion of Fritz's illnesses whilst in Spain and Dr Warren's explanation; the cholick of Poicteau. Epidemical in West Indies until lead cocks through which water passed were drained. Duke of Newcastle's family; fourteen of whom, including the Duchess, were affected by cholick contracted at Hanover. Warren published account in Medical Transactions; recommended use of laudanum etc... Warren's recommendations to maintain Fritz's current well being. Avoid excess and costiveness [constipation] and indulge in some sea bathing and changes of air. Warren not prepared to give opinion about Grantham's gout, at a distance, except that humours collect around sprains. Distresses of Ireland; Draper proposing subscription to a scheme for the relief of the poor unemployed weavers. Reference to Grantham's former membership of that body. £50 suggested sum. Diego setting off at end of week, case of books etc... to be sent on same ship. Bill of lading to be forwarded to Widow Brodeirs. Camerara Mors [?] commission; will execute when letter arrives. Don Louis's watch ready to go by Ecarano who is expected to stay but a short while after Almodobar arrives. Expecting to dine with all the foreigners on the Birthday, only knows Belgians at present. Events since last writing. Friday; tete a tete with Nanny at Sackville Street, Ranelagh at night. Joshua Reynolds, Tom Pelham, Dr Warren Saturday at Sackville Street. Sunday at St. John's with son of Lord Waldegrave. Dined also at little Legge’s, wife ill, her sister pretty. Played cards in evening at Lady K. Pelham's with Mrs. Trip. Richard Fitzpatrick arrived yesterday from America; great character etc... Sir William Howe soon expected. Burgoyne has shown little judgement in his conduct since his return. Rumoured that Lord Rochford, Lord Weymouth and Lord Suffolk will have vacant garters. Changes in ministry talked of daily: Lord North wishes to return. Obstruction to raising of militia in Sussex; not important. Smugglers do not choose to change their element. Mr. Parker's regiment encamped within few miles of Saltram. Lancashire and Derbyshire militia to be at Winchester; Duchess of Devonshire & Lady Derby glad of it. Kentish militia there too. Weather mild, Vauxhall opened but still wearing faxa or leathern waistcoat. Bishop of Chester [Beilby Porteus] in town briefly. Expects letter to arrive as Grantham leaves Aranjuez. Hates thought of him being at St. Ildephonso and then that "horrid Escurial..." Pictures for Mr. Parker, very difficult to get original Murillos but could have two Murillos in small copied by Pohl in same size as originals, cost £20-25. Lord Thurlow to be name of new Lord Chancellor. Post; still using slower route through Lisbon despite regularity of France as latter may be stopped any time. Duke de Chartres & Admiral Keppel's fleets both out. Intends to follow Lord & Lady Pelham to Sussex to see Tom whilst he is unembodied. Lady Pelham afraid of temptations of London school; intending to move George from Westminster to Hackney. Alarmed by Harry's example. All well in Sackville Street, left little boy doing his exercise with Sergeant Tap. Sorry Masin is leaving Grantham.
