Problems with post, letters not arriving consecutively. Recaps on father's illness and long stretch in bed; 6 days. Sir Clifton concerned about consequences of latter. John very attentive. Has hard task. Need to make it easier for servants. Haven't heard from Therese, whether coming to town or not. Town "thinner" than when Grantham left. "Not a soul this evening in the Park but Baron Hakel [?] consulting Dr. John Pringle upon the State of his stomach". Saw Chimney Pieces at Mr. Hayward’s. Went to Anjelica/Angelica [Kauffman’s] to see Therese's picture which has been gone two months. Thence to Mr. Hamilton's with Mrs. Townshend who sat for him. Nanny's comment. Compliments to all at Castle Howard, Stonegrave etc.
