- TitleFrom William Robertson, Edinburgh to 2nd Baron Grantham:
- Date free text31 Jan 1778
- Production dateFrom: 1778 To: 1778
- Scope and ContentRoyal Academy of History; honour conferred upon Robertson unexpected and flattering. Did merit at hands of Spaniards, "the first author of any name who has taken such a tone in relating their proceedings in America & an apology for their conduct by a Foreigner will be of more behest to them than if it had come from a native Spaniard...I am afraid that favourable as I am to them they will mutilate and mistake what I have written in their translation etc...." Answer to Don Pedro Campomanes' letter [see L30/14/333/6], perhaps has not said enough "to a people accustomed so much to superlatives in all their expressions of civility". Flattered by Grantham's opinion of his books. Improved accuracy in new edition, great part of former corrected during recovery from violent fever. With Waddilove's attention will be able to make additions of some consequence. Grateful for fortunate circumstance of Grantham's residence in Spain.
