  • Scope and Content
Thanks for letter of 15 March and accounts of Tour, Newby and publications contained therein. Describes his different residences, apologizes for any repetition. Anxious not to misrepresent them. [Expands description in L 30/14/315/24], greater detail of terrain etc... Apart from a "fit of the Gravel" and brief spell of Cholic all are well. At Aranjuez "where alone there is a fine Dairy, we breakfast in the English Manner & stuff as much Bread, Butter & Cream as we can". Otherwise it's dry toast, Chocolate or Coffee. Suppers "reckoned unwholesome; so we never eat any...". Has lost appetite to some extent, but Cook can "excite & gratify". Talks of company he keeps. “The art of living well with the people of this country, is by being plain & easy with them, neither formal nor illbred etc..” Few English there. Dr. Andrews, Provost of Dublin, visited at St. Ildefonso last year. Grantham's sister wrote she was at the Asylum [heard Porteus' sermon, see L 30/14/315/26]. P.S. Mentions paintings at Escurial. Lists residences and time of year there.
