  • Production date
    From: 1774 To: 1774
  • Scope and Content
Has given Waddilove a list of books Grantham may wish to see, scarcely any pamphlets left to send as Waddilove has made so large a collection for him. Porteus' packet consists of his Asylum Sermon, The Bishop of Chester's Sermon before the House of Lords, Jun 30 and Mr. Jones' poems. Also Dr. Markham's discourse; he is a young man under 30, a Fellow of University College, Oxford, a linguist - lists languages ancient & modern, and writes well in Greek & Latin. At around 22 translated Life of Jadiz Shah or Koubi [Kubli] out of Persia into French for King of Denmark. Tutor to Lord Althorp for a time, lived in Lord Spencer's family; great favourite there. More of his life. [Lord Chesterfield's Letters; reiterates comments in L30/14/315/3]. To be fair, they were never meant to be published. Lord Lyttleton's two volumes advertised. Saw copy of Don Gabriel's `Sallust' at Whitehall, a very fine book, surprised Universities died not send a letter of thanks to the Prince himself as well as Grantham. Waddilove showed Porteus Bayer's and D'Alembert's letters "latter is one of the finest complimentary pieces I ever saw". Has just seen a good collection of pictures belonging to Bradshaw Pierson. Six of the best gone, sold for £1000. Mr. Duncombe bought four. Those that struck Porteus were `The Fates' by Guido, two portraits of the Courano [?] family by Titian and the `Last Supper' by the same. Sale tomorrow. Has not yet seen the Exhibition, does not expect to see anything as good as the Portrait of Grantham's sister [Mrs Therese Parker], by Sir Joshua Reynolds in last year’s. Comments that both Grantham's sisters look well this Winter. Mr. Waddilove ready to leave England, held up by a squabble over "Tithes and Turnips" with lessee of Church of York. Hopes he will get the better of his "troublesome Antagonist who has attacked poor Mr. Wilson of Helperby (the most inoffensive of Human Beings) on the same Ground...". [See PS L 30/14/315/10]. P.S. Will send the `Polish Partition' if Waddilove has not.
