  • Scope and Content
Ever since the conversation with Grantham at the beginning of the year, North has been anxiously looking out for an office suitable to Grantham's rank and situation. The places of Cofferer and Chief Justice in Eyre were then engaged: one was soon after disposed of in favour of Lord Beauchamp, and the other, which has been promised to Mr Cornewall, must now be given to him before his re-election. No office has yet fallen fit for Grantham's acceptance, but His Majesty has authorised North to acquaint Grantham that it is his intention to appoint Lord Carlisle Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, and to nominate Grantham first Lord of Trade in his place. The attack made on that Board in the last session of Parliament gave to the public the idea that it was a Board of no utility or business, but the vote had hardly passed when the Board was engaged in almost instant and material employment. The appointment of Lord Carlisle cannot take place, or be declared, for some time, but North did not wish Grantham to feel forgotten and neglected when he reads in the Gazette of the appointment of Mr Cornewall.
