    Received a letter from Spain dated 15 October that a letter had been received from Choiseur [French Foreign Minister] to Grimaldi concerning reconciliation. They must not expect to involve France in a war. Refers to Falkland Island. 3 November 1770. Letters from Spain say a "warm debate" has been held in the cabinet of Spain. Refers also to France. 10 November 1770. Knows of Council lately held at the Escurial. King present. Grimaldi presented the good state of the finances. Secretary of War spoke to the same purposes and recommended farming the finances. King objected to this. D'Amaja next - promised 36 Ships of War, but did not know where to find men. D'Aranda next - he cleverly confuted it all, and read a paper which was his opinion on politics, when pressed to give it by the King's father on the subject of a family compact. Roda next - argued with D'Aranda, but had hardly spoken a word before then King got up and went away. Grimaldi hurt, and he and Aranda now declared enemies. 17 November 1770. Count Viry writes the King of Spain had been warm in council, and reports his statement, and the King of Sardinia's when the paper was read. 24 November 1770. D'Aranda would have resigned but was prevented by Roda. 1 December 1770. Notwithstanding the friendship from Spain to Portugal and also from the Court of France, Portugal had ordered some ships to be commissioned. King of Sardinia thinks Spain will come into any terms for peace. 12 December 1770. Refers to Spain and France, and the Compact. Also refers to Grimaldi. 15 December 1770. King of Spain has given an employment to Bucurilli[?]. 29 December 1770. To Lord Rochford. Refers to Choiseul and Spain. 5 January 1771. Viry thinks things too far gone to be made up. 19 January 1771. Grimaldi struck at the disgrace of Choiseul. The King of France had by letter assured the King of Spain this would not change in their system. King of Spain insists on D'Aranda and Grimaldi appearing reconciled. Hears Masseran is recalled. 30 January 1771. Viry describes the treatment of Harris at his return. D'Aranda now violent for war rather than a harmful accommodation. 2 March 1771. Had received Lord Rochford's letter no.57 of 22 February desiring that Count Viry should communicate everything to Lord Grantham. Lascairs[?] had promised orders will be sent for that purpose. The Anti-Gallican party gave ground in Spain, and the British Minister should be well with them. 11 March 1771. Scarnafi had orders to compliment the King of England on the Convention. Viry discretionary powers to do as he thought proper to the King of Spain, he consulted a proper person who advised not. 23 March 1771.
