  • Scope and Content
News of Grantham's sisters. Has heard "august Mention" of a fete given by His Majesty's Ambassador at Madrid as surpassing anything held there ever before, [see L30/17/4/42]. Report on the first day of consideration of the affairs of the India Company. Lord North moved several resolutions applying only to the present necessities of their situation and proposing to assist these by a loan of £1400,000 to be accompanied by proper regulations of the Company with regard to the future management of their affairs. He also gave a peremptory opinion that the Conquest Acquisitions on Bengal were the right of the Public and could not belong to the company - the debate on that point was reserved for another day. Lord North and Sir G. Colebrooke were obliged to give an account of what had passed between them. Burke objected to the words of one of the resolutions: Lockhart admires his talents "very highly but never knew them more ignobly exerted". The motions passed without division, and Lockhart anticipates many future days on this subject. Lady Osborne died yesterday of galloping consumption; Lord Bellamont's situation continues to be very precarious. Sir Basil Keith (Sir Robert's brother) has been made Governor of Jamaica. Almacks flourishes, despite the appearance of a rival, the New Club at General Scott's house in the area. Further Society news, including Adam's sale of his statues and pictures.
