  • Scope and Content
Translation: Milord, The enclosed arrived on the instant, a few minutes before ten o’clock in the evening, with two representatives of Justice, I was given permission to open it, but not wanting to do so, I was told something of its contents, thus it pertains to a person named Germain who used to be Mr Harris’ man and who is Your Excellency’s man without belonging to you. The said person was in a house, peacefully eating a meal, when a quarrel arose among some bad characters and one of the company was ill-treated. the said Germain declares that he was not mixed up in it, neither for or against. The said Germain is summoned to appear tomorrow at nine o’clock, which I think I must refuse, without orders from Your Excellency, unless it be as a witness only. Awaiting Your Excellency’s reply, I have the honour to be his very humble and obedient subject, F Languetin.
