- Date free text27 Feb 1773
- Production dateFrom: 1773 To: 1773
- Scope and ContentKennicott writes on account of his book [Vetus Testamentum Hebraicum, cum variis lectionibus; vol.i 1776, vol.ii 1780], patronized by the King and much indebted to Grantham's own recommendation. Letters to most British Ambassadors were sent in favour of this work, about three years ago, from the Secretaries of State, and several have now applied to Kennicott. But the only learned person in Spain to whom he writes at present is Dr. Bayer of Toledo. If possible, Kennicott wishes the enclosed proposals to be communicated soon to all the learned in Spain, in their Literary Gazettes or Newspapers. Kennicott does not know whether any other European Monarchs will honour the book by adding their names as patrons of its publication, but hopes they may. When the proposals are known, if any Spanish grandees or Doctors at Madrid or Salamanca should wish to subscribe, receipts will be ready with the Madrid bookseller named in the proposals. In England, "the subscription is open'd honourably; with some of the first Names of Dukes, Lords, Bps & Gentlemen, &, whilst advancing at home, it will wait to hear its fortune abroad." PS that a copy will also be sent to Mr. Cafiri, the Royal Librarian at Madrid.
