- Scope and ContentApologises for not replying sooner, but has been in the country over the winter. London is much improved. M. de Guines is the most popular French Minister. Lord Stanley begins his career very gallantly by giving magnificent balls. Many new Clubs are starting, and Almack's is often crowded. Hazard is not so often played due to the recent bankruptcies. Lord Holland has paid Ste's debts, about £40,000, but only the Exchequer can pay Charles'. Lord Holland declining in health; his friends estimate his wealth at not above £20,000, but James hopes and believes it is more. Ste lectures Charles on "the comfort of being out of debts and beforehand with the world". Crawford is neither better nor worse than usual. Ossory seldom comes to London and is going to sell his house. Lord Robert is permanently attached to Mr Bouverie. Falkener is going to Rome. Boothby is still a Prince at large. G. Selwin has been ill, but is now better. Lord Bellamont is not yet well from his wounds. Lord Oxford has relapsed. James has sold his house, and his "Constitution is very much mended". Recommends Miss Aikin's poetry. Asks whether Grantham might consider making a visit.
