  • Scope and Content
Carlisle has returned home, and intends to stay there until after Christmas and to become a punctual correspondent again. George is with him, and he expects Hace [?] that day from Newmarket, where Charles and Foley have won a great deal. Charles' affairs are to be laid before Lord Holland. Wilkes has lost his elections in the city and Townsend is Lord Mayor. Carlisle asks whether Grantham cannot "set us by the Ears with the Dons and then we shall have you back again?". The Duke of Buccleuch/Buccleugh's whole estate is rumoured to be bound for the Scotch bank. Lord Beauchamp and Conway have not returned from Germany - Lord Beauchamp shut himself up there to learn German; Carlisle supposes he means to keep a day school when he returns. Crawford's last letter to Carlisle said he was just setting out for the "P of Contis". Chambers new book on Oriental Gardening is condemned as having "more nonsense in it than in any book I ever read". Walpole has been at Castle Howard, and wrote George the most extravagant letter in commendation of it. East Indies affairs are in great confusion - Parliament in confusion, with neither Ministers or proprieters able to settle any plan, but the government will not be much the better for the £400,000. Carlisle hopes Spain will not take advantage of this intelligence, and feels he should have written in cypher. J Bunbury [?] is come to Holland House to inoculate her child. Carlisle would be unsurprised if she "relinquished a little the austerity of her retirement", and established herself again in the world. Reminds Grantham about sending some wine - has been drinking bad Claret and smoking tobacco with Lord Gowers and the Duke of Bridgewater. Tynmore has resigned the Star and Garter, but Carlisle hopes that the dissolution of the club will not follow upon his abdication.
