  • Scope and Content
Grateful for kind and obliging manner in which Grantham spoke of Fitzherbert's share in the signature of the American Treaty. Concerned at dissatisfaction Treaty has given at home. Mr. Strachey, when he arrives, will explain to Grantham circumstances not fully described in letters, making it clear no better terms can be obtained now or in future. M de Vergennes objects that the terms in Grantham's reply to M d'Aranda deviated from terms held out in that minister's proposals. But, unless his professed desire for peace is insincere, he will probably induce the Spanish court to accept one or other alternative. Will see him tomorrow. Whatever he says re justice St. Eustatia's claims will follow Grantham's instructions to have them withdrawn, especially as learns from Dutch minister whatever "concessions [?]" are made by Britain to France, the Dutch will expect the same. As principle the same in both cases, difficult to refute their claim.
