Doctor Lewes (b.26 Aug 1915 d.21 Apr 1997) was a consultant cardiologist at Bedford General Hospital. He campaigned against the hanging of James Hanratty who was convicted of murdering Michael Gregsten, and became one of the last men to be hanged. He was executed at Bedford Gaol on the 4th of April 1962. The documents in this collection relate to this campaign.
