  • Scope and Content
Since letter of 12 August from San Ildefonso (received 2 instant) find that "livings of Topcliffe and Cherry Burton may be fairly and honestly certifyed to be within distance of 28 computed miles. Consequently they are tenable together". Accepted Waddilove's resignation of Whitby on Saturday and today informed Mr Cowper who will go to York to complete presentation to Topcliffe so Waddilove should come over to be instituted and inducted. Will be here at Bishopthorpe until after Christmas. Wine is all come and distributed. "I hope Mrs Aislabie is better for Seabathing at Scarboro'. She suffered greatly by Buxton, and was very ill". Sir Ludovick's grant left our friend his son in very embarrassed circumstances which I learnt in Scotland. "The Migrations from the Western parts of that Country are very alarming and will continue as long as the rents are raised beyond their due proportion, and so few Land lords reside upon their estates". Guinea act "brought into Parliament in too great a hurry and too late for so important an affair. No steps were followed, that got Lord Hallifax so much honour in Sir William's time: and no new gold and silver coined to ward against the inconveniences; would have been great to everybody, but seriously detrimental to the manufacturers". Compliments... (Sic).
