- Scope and ContentWhen at Newby in first year of my marriage and my wife was pregnant, you graciously consented to be the child's godparent but as when it arrived it was a girl I said I would prefer you to wait until I had a boy. Now God has blessed me with one Thursday morning, mother and baby both doing well; will name him Thomas; please be his godfather. My business enlarges daily since I became a naturalised Englishman. I hope Jacob does his duty and behaves well with you; encloses letter for him. P.S. Am prepared with very good wine for your arrival in London. May I send you a pipe of good port to your cellar at Whitehall; it will be like Burgundy on your arrival.
