    Bearer of this note (William Lowes) comes to Madrid to settle contract on behalf of Carron Company in Scotland. Served creditably for several years as officer in Welsh Fusileers; since peace "embarked his Fortune in the Carron Company, and is now the acting Partner and generally resides at Carron and superintends the Works." [Iron works at Carron, Stirlingshire, established 1760 -see Gazeteer].
