  • Scope and Content
To the Representatives of the Tuesday Club in Spain: To give notice that according to desire of Lord Grantham a motion was formally made to that celebrated society by Mr St John "that pens, ink and paper be regularly placed on the Table before Supper (as invariably as Sandwichs are after) in order that the first comer, least he should annoy himself, and the 2nd least he should by a tête a tête annoy the other, may employ such awkward time in scibling such nonsense as he shall think fit to his Brethren in Spain". Execution unfortunately universally neglected because "letter open to the inspection of the whole society is not a convenient vehicle for any serious news". Lack of wit. A joke of Earl of Carlisle's; this evening's supper: Two tame ducks at the top; crawfish kidneys; tart; calfsfeet smelts; cutlets; Chickens Roast pie. Does not your mouth water?
