- Scope and ContentBRITISH. Captain R Croker of 99th British Regiment: Taken by combined Fleet, kept on board a month, sent to Anos de la Frontera. His letter dated 10 November 1780 ( a recommendation for parole and exchange is going on). - Tomkins: Youth taken by combined Fleet. Was on board an East India Man; thought to be at Anos de la Frontera. (has come home - via application to Mr Bell by father from Lord Lisburne). James Ratray, Captain of the Gatton East India Man : ("A recommendation has been promised to Spain in Case he should not have had permission to return to England"). SPANIARDS. Don Juan Miguel de Guicoechea, and Don Francisco Tomas de Indart, Captain and pilot of the San Bruno taken by Sir G. Rodney - both carried to Tavistock [Devon] (have been given passes to go to Poole for a boat to Spain). Don Firmin de Urttizberea, Don Gabriel de Echagoin and Don Valentin de Muxica - former at Tavistock, 2 others at Ashburton [Devon] (1st and last have gone home, Don Gabriel "has broke his Parole and run"). Don Joseph Barrientos y Rata: taken in the Santa Ynes on 24 August 1779; at Athlone on 25 March 1780. (Needs an Admiralty order to return to Spain, but will probably go when agreement re exchange settled). Received by Lord Grantham 12 February 1781, "recommended by Dr Farquharson 12 February 1781. Filed with L30/14/31/3. Letter to Lord Grantham from José Antonio de Guicoechea [in Spanish]. Request for help for Juan Miguel Goicoechea and Francisco Tomas de Indart who were captured by Admiral Rodney - 1 captain, other pilot of the San Bruno. Prisoners in Tavistock. Both relatives of mine. Sent from Madrid 28 February 1780, received May 1780. Filed with L30/14/31/3. Letter to Lord Grantham from José Antonio de Goicoechea [in Spanish]. A second appeal - on behalf of Don Fermin de Urtizberea, Gabriel de Echagoien and Valentin de Muxica, taken prisoner when Admiral Rodney captured the convoy of the Company of Caracus. The 1st at Tavistock, other 2 at Ashbuton. Families in great need of them. Sent from Madrid 20 April 1780, received 17 August [?] Filed with L30/14/31/3 Letter to Lord Grantham from Josef Barrientos y Ratto [in Spanish]. Has just received letter from brother, Don Pedro Barrientos, secretary to Marina, as I was. I was captured 24 August last in the "Santa Ynes", sailing from Manila, and of which I was 2nd captain. Reminds Lord Grantham of dreadful conditions of Prisoners Of War of which he has been one for 7 months, and of civilities received by brother from Lord Grantham. Asks for return to Spain. Gives word of honour on same conditions as did Don Juan de Langara and his officers after his clash with Admiral Rodney. Sent from Athlone, Ireland, 25 March 1780, (no date of receipt).
