    Letter to Alexander Hume-Campbell, Lord Polwarth from his nephew, Hugh Scott, sent from Mertoun. Had not replied previously to Lord Polwarth's letter of March, due to his Lordship's poor health. Hopes now to enjoy communication between them, and that a manly, sincere and lasting friendship will arise.

    'I can find no reason why we may not draw together, since it seems to be your wish that we should...' The writer visited England about a month ago. endeavouring 'to eat my way to the English Bar, for that is the object you know I have in view.' Unlikely that the correspondents will meet until the spring, when Hugh will come to London to 'keep terms at Lincoln's Inn.' He is to remain in Scotland for the winter to finish the study of the civil law and get the principles of the law of nature and nations. When that is done, hopes to have a foundation strong enough to build the law of England upon. Writer has been entertained and instructed by the volumes of statistics loaned by Lord Polwarth.
