Painters finish my new apartment tomorrow; green paper looks well; whole promises to be extremely neat and elegant; as to rooms to be new fitted up on West front, they can't be finished for 2 months. Out of doors roads are finishing and old wall taken down. Little boy has cut a tooth without trouble; prodigiously improved since 6 days' journey with maids, both in observation and noises; is taken out in park 2-3 times daily. On way stopped at Burleigh; Lord Grantham struck with pictures; Mr Brown has smoothed and laid out the grounds, having levelled and pared away at the house till he has given it appearance of higher situation; stayed dinner at Lord Exeter's desire. Papa having copies made of the pictures of Queen Elizabeth and Lord Burleigh done by a man Davies. What does family say of Mr Yorke's unexpected match - gulp and swallow quietly, or are in a pother; satisfied they cannot be, for besides objection of his knowing so little of the lady, her being so young, and their relations not thoroughly to be liked, they would have liked more consultation; above all, will agree in not liking her country, for I don't think any of them like the Scotch [this must be future 3rd Earl of Hardwicke and Elizabeth Lindsay] might certainly have done better; curious to know about settlements and if he asks advice; sure he has not head or patience enough to settle those matters properly for himself. What think you of poor Lord Rockingham's death? Might have repeated words Papa relates of Oliver St John after Cromwell's taking the government: "Is all that I have been doing come to this?" Now he is dead Papa will fancy he regrets him vastly.
