  • Scope and Content
The poacher. New meeting house has raised its head at Clophill; Nethersole says tenant Stormer is going to erect one or promote it [Silsoe?]. "The other seems to belong to the Whitbread sect, but the Methodists attend it every Sunday night, dark or light, to hear grocer Wood and butcher Whitbread" Has written to Lord Grantham, who will perhaps put a stop to building and perhaps also to Rust's preaching at the Road Houses on Sunday nights (this man works at the gardens, lives at Whitehall, married underkeeper's daughter and has converted the family). Sunday school, under Mrs Whitbread and grocer Wood's wife, is converted into a place of nocturnal worship for children to hear their husbands. Stormer built the white house on ladyship's ground at the Road Houses, and has been a contractor for haymaking and fencing; great rascal; dismissed him.
