    Instructions No. 1 issued on 2 July 1940 set out organisation of No. 1 Battalion Local Defence Volunteers as follows: - No.1 Company: Dean and Shelton, Melchbourne and Yelden, Swineshead, Pertenhall, Podington, Wymington, Knotting and Souldrop, Riseley, Bolnhurst and Keysoe, Little Staughton, Harrold, Odell, Sharnbrook, Carlton and Chellington, Pavenham, Stevington, Oakley, Felmersham, Milton Ernest, Clapham, Bletsoe, Thurleigh - No.2 Company: Turvey, Bromham, Stagsden, Kempston Rural, Wootton and Stewartby - No.3 Company: Four Borough Districts of Bedford and Bedford School - No.4 Company: Kempston Urban, Elstow, Wilshamstead, Eastcotts, Cardington, Cople, Willington - Head Quarters Company: to include utility undertakings in Bedford Borough area, viz. gas, electricity, post and telephone, factories and railways. These became known as A, B, C, D and E Companies. March 1941: E Company was renamed Headquarter Company and a new E Company was formed. November 1941: HQ Company reformed as F Company, G Company and HQ Company, to be known as HQ Administrative Group.
