37-39 Newnham Street was part of the site later occuppied by Gales Glass Merchants, which was taken over by Gibbs & Dandy in about 1972. The site was later redeveloped as Dame Alice Court, a sheltered housing scheme.
Archival history
The deeds were given to the Archives Service by the widow of John Dandy, the former chairman of Luton builders merchants Gibbs and Dandy. Mr Dandy died 2 March 2009.
Mr Dandy qualified as chartered accountant with a Luton firm before working in London and the USA. In 1967 he joined Gibbs and Dandy as Company Secretary, following his father Frank into the business. In 1971 he joined the Board and was appointed Finance Director in 1974 and Assistant Managing Director in 1976.
He became Chairman in 1981 and during his period in office the company grew significantly with the acquisition of three other businesses and major developments in Luton and Bedford. He undertook a non-executive role in 2001 before retiring in 2004.
He was actively involved in many industry organisations being President of the Luton and District Chamber of Commerce and served on various committees of the Builders Merchants Federation and Association of Electrical Distributors.
