Scope and Content
Note: The deeds in this bundle include a large number of deeds which relate entirely to property in the Market Square, Bedford, in addition to those which concern the Angel Street premises which the Master, Governors and Trustees of the Bedford Charity purchased from Thomas Gwynn Elger in 1828. Both these properties, together with others including property HT1/8 and extensive lands in the parishes of Cardington, Elstow, and Kempston formerly belonged to the Taylor family of Bedford, from whose descendants Elger bought the Angel Street premises in 1823. Further deeds to these properties have been preserved in a bundle of deeds from the offices of Theed Pearse, a Bedford solicitor and County Official of some note, whose firm was involved in the conveyancing of the lands of the Taylor and Leach families at some date in the late Eighteenth or early Nineteenth century. These deeds date back to 1513, but from the available evidence it seems that the earliest deeds in the bundle relate to property HT1/8 and not to property HT1/6. Some of the deeds in the bundle do relate to property HT1/6, however, and full abstracts of the relevant items are given in the following catalogue. Their reference is AD152-6, and AD158-9. The deeds relating to the Angel Street property are listed in HT1/6A, and those which deal with the property in the Market Square are described in full in HT1/6B
