  • Scope and Content
For details of the opening and changes to the schools see introduction to Waller Street School. Ends with note from F W Smith, head master ‘Finish my work in connection with the school today. Have been head master here now for 3 years 2 months; and during the whole of that period have not had an adequate staff. I feel convinced that the system of working the school with the small staff that has been in operation must in the long run, & has in fact already proved very detrimental to the character and work of the scholars and I have no doubt my predecessor [sic] will find it impossible to work the school satisfactorily without further assistance.’ The style of this log book is more descriptive and informative than many other log books, mentioning many events in the town as well as describing issues to do with corporal punishment and the effect of the downturn in the hat trade on the savings bank.
