- TitleNotes on Wrestlingworth, Potton, Tempsford, Blunham and Sandy for the Open Air Meetings Campaign.
- Date free textNotes for open air meetings on 20 July 1948.
- Production dateFrom: 1948 To: 1948
- Scope and ContentNotes read:- 'Wrestlingworth. 373 Electors. 100% agricultural. Mr. L. Brown, 14, Church Lane, Wrestlingworth is the Chairman - and Mrs. Randall, Home Farm, Wrestlingworth is the Hon. Secretary; Mr. Lennox-Boyd attended an excellent social here in the Spring. There is a voluble Labour minority in Wrestlingworth led by one or two extremely unpleasant characters. Mr. Brown has his pulse on the village very well, and when we organise functions they are usually pretty well attended. Potton. 1,575 Electors. Practically 100% agricultural (market gardening). here we have a very good women's Branch - Chairman Mrs. Bartle, Wisteria House, Potton - Hon. Secretary Mrs. Munkman - 6, Brook End, Potton. Also a small Conservative Club - Chairman Mr. G. Gurney, 7 Chapel Street, Potton - Hon. Secretary Mr. F.C. Chapman, 29, Sun Street, Potton. A few Young Conservatives in Potton work with the Biggleswade Branch - although there is a move to form a separate branch. The Radical feeling in Potton is fairly strong - and the Co-operative Society have recently bought up a property just outside - where they are employing a large number of workers. Mr. Lennox-Boyd spoke here recently. Tempsford. 347 Electors. Practically entirely agricultural. President - Mr. J.S. Biss, The Cottage, Tempsford - Chairman Mr. John Ream, Church Farm, and Hon Secretary, Mrs. Infield, Ouse Farm, Tempsford. (All these houses are near the Church). The village is in two sections - and the meeting is being held outside Lambcourt Farm about 3/4 of a mile away. We held a very successful dance just before Christmas and a Cinema Show - but it is not an easy village to organise. Mrs. Infield feels that a few months ago the Labour Party made some headway. This however, may be offset by recent developments. Blunham. 447 Electors. We have an extremely good branch in this Village. President - Major General T.C. Newton, D.S.C., of Blunham House - Mr. G. Harding, Tempsford Road, Blunham is the Chairman - and Miss E.M. Prigmore - Red Cottage, Blunham is the Hon. Secretary. They really are a go-ahead crowd and are most active in the winter months - as they are all engaged in market gardening in the Summer and not able to organise so many functions. Our support in the village is approximately 60% - and the Opposition is more Labour than Radical on the whole. Sandy. 2,593 Electors. One of the three largest Polling Districts in the Constituency. Here we have an excellent Conservative Club - Chairman Mr. H. Cope, Sandhills, Sandy - Hon. Secretary Mr. A.E. Walker, 99, High Street, Sandy - Chairman women's Branch - Mrs. Pym, The Hassells - Hon. Secretary Mrs. Clarke 43, Cambridge Road, Sandy. You will not be able to see Mrs. Pym who is in London - but do call on Mrs. Clarke. Sandy is 100% Agricultural (market gardening). The membership of the women's Branch is over 300 - an approximately the same for the Conservative Club. It is, however, the Headquarters of the Communist Party. Mr. Matthews - the leader (who incidentally is Secretary of the Agricultural workers' Union) is a very nasty piece of work. The Labour Party is very active in Sandy as is also the Liberal Party - but fortunately our own organisation is strong, so that we more than hold our own. It should be stressed here that Mr. Lennox-Boyd is Chairman of the Horticultural Committee in the House of Commons. We tried to re-organise the Young Conservatives after the war - with not very much success, and this is our weak link in Sandy. Mr. Lennox-Boyd spoke recently in Sandy.
