    The by election was caused by the elevation to the peerage of Cyril Flower on 5 Sep 1892 as Baron Battersea of Battersea, London and of Overstrand, Norfolk. He was described by G E C Complete Peerage as 'enobled on Gladstone's recommendation and certainly not one of his more successful efforts to adorn the Upper House.' The election was held on 30 Sep 1892 and Samuel Howard Whitbread (Liberal) polling 4838 votes, had a majority of 242 over Col. Duke (Liberal Unionist), who polled 4596. The electorate was 13,841. There were 39 spoilt papers.
