  • Scope and Content
Joseph Lineham: about 11 o’clock on Saturday 4 November he was disturbed by a noise and opened his window. He spoke to somebody who he though was William France as he lodged close to him. The man answered but it was William France and immediately William France came with a light. He did not know who the other man was. He saw something close to where the man sat. It was a fowl of some kind. He threatened to acquaint Mr Higgins and they went away. William France went to bed. George Hicks: he had the turkey. He fetched it from Mr Whitworth’s. It was outside the turkey house door. He took it to where William France lodged. He, William France and John Johnson were at the public house on the Saturday afternoon. They went out together. He was to fetch the turkey and they were to get a faggot to cook it. He also took a hen which he left at William France’s. Joseph Linehan disturbed them as they took the turkey to the lodgings. He put it in the garden. John Johnson: he had nothing to say but he had nothing to do with it. John Whitworth: in consequence of information received he got up and found turkey feather scattered about the turkey house joining the farm yard. He traced the turkey feather to a cottage in which William France lived. He called him up and asked him how he came by the feathers. France said George Hicks stole the turkey and a hen and bought them to his house. They had gone for a faggot to cook it but were prevented by Joseph Lineham who lived next door. They all went away. Some time on the Sunday, George Hicks offered to show him the turkey. He went with Hicks to a cottage garden and Hicks pointed out the turkey which was cut into bits under the bank. All 3 men had been in his service up to the present and earned between 2s and 2s 6d a day. Jonathan Sanders: on 4 November John Johnson, George Hicks and William France were drinking together in his house from about 9pm until 10.15pm when they left. William France: he had nothing to do with it. The turkey and fowl were taken to his house.
