Deposition of Thomas Charles George on his Oath saith as follows: I am a Farmer and live at Colworth. The Prisoner has been in my employ as a Labourer for two years and half. On May 30 last PC Matthews brought the Prisoner to my House and showed me the Butter produced and asked if I had been churning. I said yes and we compared the Butter he brought with what was left in the Dairy and it appeared to be part of the same. I have previously [missed] Butter. I value the Butter stolen at 2/3. I gave the Prisoner into custody of PC Matthews. Deposition of Ebenezer Matthews on his Oath saith On May 30 last about 6pm. I was on duty on the New Lodge Road Sharnbrook when I met the Prisoner coming from the direction of Mr. George’s farm. I asked him what he had in the Basket on his shoulder. On looking into it I found the Butter now produced tied up in a Handkerchief. The Prisoner said “it is some butter I had from Barker at Knight Farm. I said “it has not been made up” he replied it was too soft they could not make it up. I took him towards Barkers and on the way he said “I told you a lie it is Mr Georges butter he had gave it to me” I then took him to Mr Georges and showed him the butter and told him what the Prisoner said. Mr George said he had been churning that day and it liked like his. He then showed me some which had not been made up. I compared it and it appeared to be identical. I then weighed the butter and it weighed 2lb and 12oz. I then took him into custody. Statement of Accused “Guilty”
